Developer Job Postings Rise Despite AI Coding Tools, Senior Roles Dominate

Shifting Demand for Software Developers

U.S. software development job postings have increased since February 2025, when Anthropic’s Claude Code launched, even as overall job advertisements declined. This trend complicates earlier forecasts that artificial intelligence would quickly eliminate the need for developers.

Concerns about the future of software development as a profession intensified with the adoption of AI-powered coding tools, particularly as these tools advanced. By 2023, Microsoft’s GitHub reported that AI was responsible for nearly half of all code on projects where it was available. Some AI experts suggest that AI-written code across GitHub now surpasses the halfway mark. While GitHub has not confirmed this figure, it stated in October that one in three “pull requests”—the collaborative process for proposing code changes—now involve an AI agent, up from fewer than one in 10 a year prior. GitHub projected that if this pace continues, most code pushed to the platform could be AI-generated within two years, with much of it potentially never fully reviewed by a human.

Market Rebound and Role Specialization

Labor market researchers note that the profession is evolving rather than disappearing. Indeed Hiring Lab data indicates that U.S. software-development job postings have risen almost 15% since February 2025, diverging from both the broader job market and coding output trends.

Some economists view the resurgence in software job postings as evidence for an optimistic perspective on AI’s impact on employment. Eric Kutcher, North America chair at McKinsey, observed that earlier predictions of declining developer demand have not materialized. Instead, he noted on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” that companies are generating more code than ever, leading to high demand for developers skilled in working with AI. Kutcher stated, “We’re seeing much more growth in the places we thought we were gonna see the biggest displacement.”

McKinsey Global Institute research on AI and future jobs clarifies that the prior dip in software developer roles was not solely AI-driven. While AI has automated some development tasks, the recent recovery follows a sharp decline from a 2022 hiring peak, when tech companies scaled back after a pandemic-fueled hiring spree.

Despite the recovery, software-development job postings remain about 27.5% below their pre-pandemic levels, according to Indeed Hiring Lab. Critically, the increase is concentrated in senior-level roles and specialized AI-oriented positions. Indeed Hiring Lab found that senior roles accounted for 71% of the increase in software-development postings between May 2025 and May 2026. Job titles explicitly mentioning AI contributed 37% to this growth.

Future Skills and Oversight

AI tools enable companies to produce code more rapidly than developers could independently. GitHub leaders have previously suggested that AI could eventually write up to 80% or more of code, especially as developers gain proficiency with these tools. This implies that demand for workers will increasingly focus on those who can evaluate AI-generated code, diagnose problems, and integrate new tools into an organization’s broader technology infrastructure.

Sneha Puri, an economist at Indeed Hiring Lab, noted that companies are realizing that even if AI handles some technical coding tasks, developers are still essential for overseeing this work, refining products, and assisting clients in integrating the technology into daily operations. She cited the growing need for professionals who can help businesses apply AI tools beyond their initial construction.
