A new draft policy suggests that Special Economic Zones (SEZs) should permit payments in Indian Rupees for services obtained from businesses operating in the domestic tariff area (DTA). This proposal represents a potential change from the current requirement for foreign exchange transactions within SEZs. The measure would apply to services ranging from infrastructure maintenance to professional consulting.

The policy's objective is to reduce operational complexities and transaction costs for units within SEZs. By facilitating rupee payments, the Ministry of Commerce aims to simplify financial flows between SEZ-based enterprises and their DTA service providers. This alignment seeks to remove a long-standing point of friction for businesses that operate across both zones.

Such a policy could strengthen the domestic currency's role in local trade while potentially enhancing the competitiveness of Indian SEZs. The draft note suggests this move could support broader economic goals by fostering greater integration between the SEZ framework and the domestic economy. Final approval and implementation of the draft note could lead to more efficient business practices for companies engaged in both DTA and SEZ operations.
