Soaring Crude Prices Pressure Gold as Fed Rate Hike Bets Intensify
Gold prices face downward pressure driven by a surge in crude oil, which is fueling expectations for the US Federal Reserve to raise interest rates. This dynamic strengthens the USD and increases real yields, reducing gold's appeal as a non-yielding…
Crude-Driven Inflation Risks and Gold's Retreat
Gold prices are under pressure as crude oil's rally stokes fears of renewed inflation, leading markets to price in a higher probability of a US Federal Reserve rate hike. This prospect strengthens the US dollar and pushes real interest rates higher, diminishing gold's attractiveness as a non-yielding asset.
According to Anuj Gupta, Head of Commodity and Currency at HDFC Securities, rising crude oil prices typically contribute to inflationary pressures. This scenario strengthens the case for central banks, particularly the US Fed, to tighten monetary policy. Higher rates increase the opportunity cost of holding gold, leading investors to reallocate capital toward interest-bearing assets. Gupta suggests gold may find support around USD 2,280, with a potential decline to USD 2,220 if the current trend persists.
Technical Levels and Market Outlook
Expert analysis indicates critical technical levels for gold amidst the current macroeconomic headwinds. Sugandha Sachdeva, Executive Vice President for Commodity & Currency Research at Religare Broking, noted gold has found resistance at the USD 2,380 level. A decisive break above this point could signal a bullish reversal, potentially pushing prices towards USD 2,420 and then USD 2,460.
Conversely, strong support is identified near the USD 2,280 mark. Sachdeva added that a breach below this support could expose gold to further losses, with potential downside targets at USD 2,240 and USD 2,200. The immediate outlook remains cautious, reflecting the market's response to inflation concerns and anticipated Fed actions. Traders are advised to monitor crude oil price movements and upcoming US economic data closely for shifts in sentiment regarding monetary policy.
Impact of Fed Policy on Gold Valuation
The anticipation of a more hawkish Fed stance, driven by elevated crude prices, directly influences gold's valuation. When the Fed raises rates, it increases the attractiveness of dollar-denominated assets and boosts real yields. As a result, investors tend to reduce their exposure to gold, which offers no yield and becomes less competitive against interest-bearing alternatives.
Market participants are closely watching the Fed's communications for any signals regarding future rate adjustments. Should the central bank confirm a hawkish pivot, gold prices could experience sustained downward pressure. Conversely, any indication of a dovish shift or a pause in rate hikes could provide a reprieve for the yellow metal, potentially allowing it to regain some lost ground against the dollar.
