Lilly's Strategic Shift into Vaccine Development

Eli Lilly plans to acquire three vaccine developers in transactions collectively valued at up to $4 billion. This move marks a renewed focus for the weight-loss drug market leader on infectious disease prevention, as confirmed by reports from The Wall Street Journal.

The company will acquire Indianapolis-based Curevo, LimmaTech Biologics, and Vaccine Company. These acquisitions signal Lilly's intention to broaden its product pipeline beyond established successes in diabetes and obesity, such as its GLP-1 drugs.

Details of the Acquisitions and Vaccine Targets

Curevo is developing a shingles vaccine that Lilly believes offers superior efficacy and fewer side effects compared to current standards, according to Daniel Skovronsky, Lilly's chief scientific and product officer. The deal for Curevo includes an undisclosed upfront payment and potential milestone-based payments, totaling up to $1.5 billion.

LimmaTech Biologics focuses on vaccines against bacterial pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus. Lilly's agreement for LimmaTech involves up to $780 million, comprising an undisclosed upfront payment and additional payments tied to clinical and regulatory milestones. LimmaTech's staph vaccine, if proven successful, could be administered to patients pre-surgery to prevent staph infections. Currently, no licensed vaccine exists for staph aureus.

Vaccine Company is developing a vaccine to protect against mononucleosis and potentially reduce the long-term risk of multiple sclerosis, by targeting the Epstein-Barr virus. Lilly's payment for Vaccine Company could reach up to $1.55 billion, including an undisclosed upfront payment and potential milestone payments. Skovronsky noted the absence of a licensed Epstein-Barr virus vaccine.

Market Implications and Future Outlook

The pharmaceutical sector has seen significant interest in vaccine developers, particularly for polio and Covid-19, though Lilly has not focused on this segment previously. The company's prior infectious-disease products included an original polio vaccine. Skovronsky stated that new acquisitions could establish infectious disease prevention as a core focus alongside treatments for diabetes, obesity, immunology, and neurodegeneration.

Lilly has been actively pursuing deals, supported by strong cash flows from its GLP-1 drugs, including Zepbound for weight loss and Mounjaro for diabetes. The company has also acquired several companies developing drugs for cancer, sleep disorders, and autoimmune conditions, with valuations exceeding $10 billion.

Curevo's shingles vaccine has completed a midstage clinical trial and could become a commercial product within a few years if successful. Shingles vaccines are recommended for US adults aged 50 and older. Skovronsky emphasized that the burden of infectious diseases globally continues to increase, and these scientific tools offer a means to address this challenge.
