Shares of SoftBank Group have recently surged over 10%, leading market observers to consider the potential for a short squeeze. This upward price movement occurs after bearish bets against the technology investment firm climbed to their highest point in more than ten years. Data from S&P Global Market Intelligence shows that the number of SoftBank shares held short increased to 6.2% of its free float in August, a significant rise from 3.7% at the end of July. This metric reached 9% when considering the company's American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) listed in the US, indicating substantial negative sentiment among investors.

The current setup suggests that if SoftBank's stock continues its rally, short sellers may face increasing pressure to close their positions. Covering these shorts involves purchasing shares, which in turn would exert additional upward pressure on the stock price. Such a scenario could create a feedback loop, accelerating the share's ascent. The firm's recent performance in its technology investments will be a key factor determining whether the bullish momentum can be sustained, potentially trapping short-sellers who positioned themselves for a decline.
