Anthropic Tops OpenAI Valuation with $965 Billion Funding Round
AI startup Anthropic secured $965 billion in its latest funding round, surpassing OpenAI's valuation. The company achieved an 80-fold revenue increase in the first quarter, fueled by strong growth metrics and an anticipated public listing.
Anthropic's Surging Valuation
AI startup Anthropic recently concluded a funding round that places its valuation at $965 billion, exceeding ChatGPT maker OpenAI. This capital infusion arrives as both companies prepare for potential public listings this year. Anthropic has emerged as a leader in the AI race, aiming to list its shares next month, with ambitions to achieve $50 billion in annualized revenue. This metric, which AI startups use to project short-term sales, indicates the company's rapid expansion.
The first quarter saw Anthropic's revenue grow 80-fold. Founded in 2021 by Dario Amodei and other former OpenAI employees, Anthropic secured $65 billion from investors including Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, and Sequoia Capital. This amount represents roughly half of OpenAI's total fundraising to date, which was closed earlier this year. The $965 billion valuation more than doubles Anthropic's prior valuation.
Growth and Competitive Landscape
Anthropic's revenue is expected to surpass $10.9 billion in the second quarter, driven by an explosive growth rate that could lead to profitability for the first time. The Wall Street Journal reported on these projections. Anthropic, once considered a second-tier participant in the AI sector, now appears to be a significant challenger to OpenAI. The company released its chatbot in late 2022 and has since attracted hundreds of millions of users.
In contrast to traditional chatbot development, Anthropic focuses on business customers, particularly in automated coding and semi-autonomous software, developing advanced AI capabilities. The company's stock has faced sell-offs, exceeding $1 trillion. Investors have expressed jitters about software firms after Anthropic released simple plug-ins that reportedly caused fear among rivals. OpenAI, which closed a $122 billion funding round earlier this year, has its own competing tool called Codex, and both companies are locked in intense competition for business users.
Market Impact and Future Plans
This record-breaking fundraising round, the largest in Silicon Valley's history, has equipped Anthropic to unlock substantial computing resources. The company intends to use these resources to aggressively expand its Codex user base. Anthropic's growth rate has accelerated more than eight times faster than anticipated. The company has also encountered computing disruptions, with some users reporting outages or performance degradation.
Anthropic recently finalized a deal valued at nearly $50 billion with SpaceX. This agreement grants Anthropic access to the computing power of SpaceX's Colossus data center, which is part of its rocket and AI operations.
