India's Upgraded Growth Outlook

Moody's Investors Service has increased its economic growth forecast for India to 7% for the fiscal year 2027. This adjustment reflects the country's economic resilience, driven primarily by strong domestic demand and sustained expansion in the manufacturing sector. The revision follows an earlier projection of 6.6% for FY27, which Moody's updated in May.

The global rating agency pointed to India's capacity to withstand international economic pressures, noting that robust domestic economic momentum provides a buffer against external volatility. For the current fiscal year, FY26, Moody's maintains its forecast for India's economic growth at 6.8%.

Persistent Inflationary Concerns

Despite the positive growth outlook, Moody's flagged inflation as a critical risk. The agency specifically highlighted elevated food prices as a key concern. While overall inflation has eased, core inflation, excluding volatile food and energy components, has remained stable. However, potential surges in food prices could reignite broader inflationary pressures, posing a challenge for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Moody's analysis suggests that the RBI will need to balance supporting growth with its mandate for price stability. Any sustained increase in food prices could necessitate a tighter monetary stance, potentially impacting credit availability and investment. This dynamic places increased scrutiny on the monsoon season and agricultural output, key drivers of food inflation in India.

Long-Term Fundamentals and Risks

The upgraded forecast for FY27 underscores Moody's view of India's favorable long-term growth fundamentals. The agency emphasized that structural reforms, infrastructure development, and a growing working-age population continue to support the country's economic potential. India's expanding middle class also contributes significantly to consumption-led growth.

However, the report also identified additional risks beyond inflation. Geopolitical uncertainties, global trade tensions, and the pace of global economic recovery could still influence India's growth trajectory. While domestic factors are strong, an interconnected global economy means external shocks cannot be entirely discounted. Policymakers face the task of fostering sustained growth while proactively managing both domestic and international headwinds.
